Preparing your pool for the closing winter season

Although the Australian winter is not as cold as other places, your swimming pool requires special care in cooler seasons.

Start with a deep clean

To start with, if you are planning to stop using your pool in winter, make sure you give it as good a clean as possible - and not only by using your Kreepy Krauly. It will protect your swimming pool from algae forming. However you need to thoroughly scrub your swimming pool tiles, making sure you have not forgotten any corner and remove all of the debris. Check your swimming pool lights as well; you don’t want to leave them out. No matter how well your swimming pool cleaners have been serving you over the summer, make sure you perform the final swimming pool clean up.

In order to keep the water fresh you need to add chlorine right before the cooler seasons starts and during winter as well. If you are not sure how many times you should add chlorine during winter and which product to use, your local swimming pool shop can assist you with details. As soon as you poor the product in your swimming pool let the swimming pool pump spread it evenly. Just let it run for couple of hours.

Ensure all your equipment works

Now, when you have finished preparing your swimming pool for cold weather, you need to clean the pool filters and all the equipment you have been running all summer. This can include salt water chlorinators, barracuda pool cleaners, a zodiac pool cleaner, polaris pool cleaner or any other tools you have been using. They all need a very good clean. This will prevent germs and debris from spreading in your water. Any dirt such as scum or scaling left in the filter over winter will be a nightmare to remove when you want to start using your pool again. Therefore, make sure your pool filters, skimmers and everything else are in great condition.

Do not forget to run filters and cleaning systems a couple of hours each week to make sure they are in working order and nothing has gone wrong. Test your Kreepy Krauly from now on as well. It is a good prevention method to simply make sure your equipment is in good shape which means less hassle in summer when it is time to enjoy your swimming pool, not waste time fixing it.

Check the chemical levels

Finally, before you stop using your pool, check the pH, chlorine and alkaline levels. You need to make sure the levels are where they should be. If you are not sure about it, you can always ask the experts at Pool & Spa Warehouse.

Now if everything has been done properly you have nothing to worry about and your swimming pool is ready to be closed for winter and will be waiting for you to start using it again.
