3 Ways To Save Energy In Heated Pools
There are a multitude of reasons for heating pools. For some it is a matter of comfort or preference, or to teach young children to swim. Irrespective of the reasoning, it is paramount that the heating system is as energy efficient as possible.
Pool heating systems are renowned for causing high energy bills, and for burning through valuable resources. Here are three ways to heat your pool without wasting money or energy.
Choose an energy efficient swimming pool pump:
1. Solar heating
This is a very cost effective system to run day to day, and is competitively priced with both hot water pumps and gas heating. Solar pool heating works by pumping pool water through a filter and then through a solar collector (which attracts and stores the warmth of the sun) to heat the water before it is returned to the pool.
The only criticism of solar pool heaters is derived from its reliance on the sun. When the sun doesn’t shine for a prolonged period, the pool heating consistency can be affected.
2. Heat Pump Pool Heater
Hot water pumps are complex, but they are an effective and energy efficient option for heating pools. Using electricity to transfer energy from one place to another, rather than to generate heat, heat pump pool heaters are both efficient and reliable.
Heat pump pool heaters are more expensive to buy than gas pumps, but their energy efficiency saves day to day expenditure. If the systems are maintained properly, heat pump pool heaters also have significant longevity and are known to outlive gas systems.
3. Gas Heating
Gas heating is the most popular, but by far the least efficient of these three pool heating options. Using either natural gas or cobrane, gas heaters draw water from the pool through the heater and pump it back out to the pool. Gas burns in the combustion chamber of the system, producing heat that warms the water. Installation and maintenance are imperative in ensuring your gas heater is working at peak efficiency.
Gas heaters are effective for heating water quickly and are a better choice for those who don’t heat the swimming pool on a regular basis.
