Proactive Phosphate Management for Clearer Pool Water

Lo-Chlor Starver is a specialised pool maintenance treatment that helps maintain clearer water by managing nutrients that support algae growth.

By reducing phosphate levels, Starver supports more efficient chlorine performance and helps keep your pool looking clear, balanced, and inviting with less ongoing effort.

Highly concentrated and easy to apply, Starver is ideal for regular preventative pool care and works seamlessly alongside your existing sanitising system.

Professional water management for consistently clear pool water

Features & Benefits

  • Targets phosphates – helps remove nutrients that contribute to algae growth.
  • Supports clearer water – promotes improved water clarity and sparkle.
  • Enhances sanitiser efficiency – helps chlorine and other sanitisers work more effectively.
  • Filter-friendly formulation – captured by the filter without clouding pool water.
  • Compatible with all pool types – suitable for chlorine, salt, mineral, and ioniser systems.
  • Concentrated and economical – small doses deliver consistent results.

How It Works

Phosphates enter pool water from a variety of everyday sources, including leaves, dust, fertilisers, and swimmer activity. Even small amounts can support algae growth.

Lo-Chlor Starver works by binding phosphates as water passes through the filter, allowing them to be removed during normal filtration. With fewer nutrients available, algae growth is naturally reduced and water stays clearer for longer.

Advanced phosphate care

How to Use

  • Ensure pool water pH is between 7.2 and 7.8 before dosing.
  • Shake well before use.
  • Check filter pressure prior to dosing and clean the filter if required.
  • With the pump running, add the dose directly to the skimmer.
  • Allow normal filtration to capture phosphates.
  • When adding larger volumes, monitor filter pressure during dosing.
  • Backwash or clean the filter as required after treatment.

Dosage & Coverage

  • Initial Treatment:
    • Add 500mL per 50,000 litres every 2–3 days.
    • Continue dosing until the container is finished.
    • After completing the initial treatment, have phosphate levels re-tested to confirm they are within the recommended range.
    • Ongoing Maintenance:
      • Once phosphate levels are within the recommended range (0–0.2 ppm), apply a maintenance dose.
      • Add 500mL per 50,000 litres every 2 weeks.
      • Periodic phosphate testing is recommended to maintain optimal levels.

    Important Usage & Compatibility Information

    • Compatible with all recognised pool sanitisers and pool finishes.
    • Suitable for freshwater and saltwater pools.
    • Safe for use in aquariums, ponds, and lakes when used as directed.
    • Non-toxic and biodegradable.
    • Regular water testing supports consistent results.

Where phosphate levels are around 1.0 ppm or higher, an initial reduction using Starver X is recommended before transitioning to Starver for ongoing maintenance.

    Frequently Asked Questions

When should phosphate levels be tested?
Phosphate testing is best done before starting Starver. If phosphate levels are around 1.0 ppm or higher, an initial reduction using Starver X is recommended to bring levels below 1.0 ppm before transitioning to Starver for ongoing maintenance.
How much phosphate is considered high?
Even small amounts of phosphate can support algae growth. As a guide, levels around 0.2 ppm may contribute to faster nutrient build-up, while higher levels provide more available nutrients in the water.
Why can phosphate test results sometimes read low when algae is present?
When algae is actively growing, it can absorb phosphates from the water. This can mean a test result may appear low because the phosphate has been taken up and is no longer freely measurable in the water sample.
Why can phosphate levels increase after treating algae?
After algae is treated (for example with superchlorination or an algaecide), phosphates that were previously held within the algae can be released back into the water. Managing phosphates afterwards supports ongoing water clarity and balanced conditions.
What should I expect with filter pressure during dosing?
When adding larger volumes (around 1 litre or more), monitor filter pressure during addition, especially with cartridge filters. A small rise in filter pressure can be a normal sign that the filter is capturing material effectively. As a guide, an increase of about 5 kPa is considered ideal for efficient phosphate removal.
Is Starver useful even when my pool water looks clear?
Yes. Starver is a preventative maintenance product that helps manage phosphate levels as part of regular pool care. This supports consistent water clarity and helps keep your pool looking its best over time.
Do I need to keep testing phosphates during maintenance dosing?
Periodic phosphate testing is recommended as part of routine water checks. This helps confirm levels remain within the ideal range and supports the best ongoing maintenance schedule.
