Zodiac Pool Long Life Algaecide is a copper-based treatment designed to control algae and provide extended preventative support in swimming pools. One application can remain effective for up to three months, making it especially useful for winterising or periods when the pool cannot be checked as frequently.
Its cupric ammonium complex formula is suitable for green, blue-green and mustard algae, as well as black spot treatment. Its long-lasting action supports ongoing algae prevention between regular pool maintenance.

How It Works
Copper ions interfere with the enzymes and cell processes algae need for reproduction and photosynthesis. Unlike short-term treatments, the copper remains available in the pool water and is mainly depleted while actively controlling algae spores.
This residual action allows Pool Long Life Algaecide to continue supporting algae prevention between applications.
How to Use
- Test the pool water, including pH, Total Alkalinity and copper level.
- Adjust pH to 7.2–7.6 and complete any alkalinity correction at least 48 hours before treatment.
- Brush affected pool surfaces before applying the product.
- Add the required dose based on the pool volume and run normal circulation and filtration.
- For active algae treatment, brush affected surfaces again and remove dead algae through filtration and normal pool cleaning.
- Test the copper level before applying another dose.
Dosage & Coverage
- Standard dose: Add 200mL per 10,000 litres of pool water.
- Coverage: One 20L drum treats 1,000,000 litres of pool water.
- Application frequency: Apply once every three months.
Important Usage Information
- Test the copper level before repeat treatment. Copper concentration should not exceed 1.0ppm.
- Do not add alkaline products for 48 hours before or after treatment. High pH and Total Alkalinity can cause copper to plate out and stain pool surfaces.
- Do not use in ionised pools, in pools with elevated copper levels, or with chlorinator systems that advise against copper-based algaecides.
- Use a clarifier after active algae treatment if fine dead algae remains suspended in the water.
- Chemically clean the filter after an algae bloom to remove trapped algae and reduce the risk of reinfestation.
- This product does not replace chlorine. Maintain the required sanitiser level, circulation and filtration throughout treatment.
Maintain free chlorine at 2–4ppm and pH at 7.2–7.6. Keep Total Alkalinity at 80–120ppm for fully tiled, pebble and plaster pools, or 125–150ppm for vinyl and fibreglass pools.

Why does Pool Long Life Algaecide last longer than a regular algaecide?
Its copper-based formula remains available in the pool water after application and is gradually used as it controls algae spores. This gives the product a longer preventative effect than short-term algae treatments.
Why should I test the copper level before applying another dose?
Copper can remain in the water after treatment, so adding another full dose without testing may push the concentration too high. Keep the copper level at or below 1.0ppm to reduce the risk of staining.
Why must pH and Total Alkalinity be balanced before treatment?
High pH or Total Alkalinity can cause dissolved copper to come out of solution and deposit on pool surfaces. Complete any balance corrections at least 48 hours before applying Pool Long Life Algaecide.
Can Pool Long Life Algaecide be used in an ionised pool?
No. Ionised pools already use copper as part of their treatment system, so adding another copper-based algaecide may increase the copper level too far. Zodiac Pool Algaecide or Zodiac Supreme Pool Algaecide are metal-free alternatives.
Is Pool Long Life Algaecide suitable for winterising?
Yes. Its extended residual action makes it useful when the pool receives less frequent attention during colder months. Balance the water, maintain sanitiser and filtration, remove debris and apply the measured dose as part of the winterising routine.
Can I use Pool Long Life Algaecide to treat black spot?
Yes, the product is recommended for black spot treatment as well as green, blue-green and mustard algae. Thorough brushing is important because black spot can attach firmly to hard pool surfaces and develop a protective outer layer.
Why might I need a clarifier after algae treatment?
Dead algae can remain as fine suspended material after treatment. Zodiac Natural Clarifier or Zodiac Clarifier can help combine these particles so the filter can collect them more effectively.
