Reduce Phosphates for Easier Algae Prevention
Zodiac Phosphate Remover is an ultra-concentrated treatment for reducing phosphate levels in swimming pool water. Its rare earth salt formula binds dissolved phosphates into insoluble particles that can be captured and removed by the pool filter.
Phosphates are a key nutrient source for algae and can enter the pool through leaves, soil, fertiliser runoff, swimmer products and source water. Reducing this food supply helps limit recurring algae growth, supports more effective chlorine use and makes clear pool water easier to maintain.
Features & Benefits
- Removes algae food: Reduces phosphates that can support algae growth and recurring blooms.
- Supports chlorine efficiency: With fewer nutrients supporting algae growth, chlorine can focus more effectively on sanitising the pool water.
- Supports clearer water: Helps reduce high-nutrient conditions associated with early algae development and cloudy water.
- Ultra-concentrated formula: Contains 200g/L rare earth salts for high-strength phosphate treatment.
- Problem solver and maintenance product: Suitable for treating elevated phosphate levels or maintaining consistently low levels.
- Suitable for all filter types: Works with the filtration system to collect and remove bound phosphate particles.

Dosage & Coverage
- To reduce phosphate by 250ppb: Add 45mL per 10,000 litres of pool water.
- To reduce phosphate by 500ppb: Add 90mL per 10,000 litres of pool water.
- Weekly maintenance: Add 50mL per 10,000 litres of pool water.
Important Usage Information
- Test the phosphate level and confirm the pool volume before calculating the treatment dose.
- Add the required dose through the skimmer and run the filtration system for approximately 24 hours.
- Temporary cloudiness may occur as dissolved phosphates bind into particles for filtration. Zodiac Natural Clarifier is recommended to help the filter collect these particles and restore clarity more quickly.
- Thoroughly backwash a media filter or clean the cartridge elements after treatment to remove the accumulated phosphate particles.
- Wait at least 48 hours after treatment before retesting the phosphate level.
- Phosphate removers can reduce the effectiveness of sequestrants containing phosphonic or phosphoric acid, including Zodiac Calcium Down and Zodiac Metal Remover. Do not apply these treatments together.
Phosphate removal supports algae prevention but does not replace correct sanitiser levels, water balance, circulation or filtration. Maintain free chlorine at 2–4ppm and pH at 7.2–7.8. Keep Total Alkalinity at 80–120ppm for fully tiled, pebble and plaster pools, or 125–150ppm for vinyl and fibreglass pools.
A Better Pool Experience Starts with the Right Chemistry
Zodiac pool chemicals support the key parts of everyday water care, from balance and sanitising to algae prevention, clarity, stain control and equipment protection.
Each product has a clear role in helping pool water stay cleaner, more comfortable and easier to manage, so the pool feels ready to enjoy more often.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Phosphate Remover an algaecide?
No. Zodiac Phosphate Remover does not directly kill algae. It removes phosphate, which is a nutrient source that algae can use to grow. Correct chlorine levels, water balance, circulation and filtration are still required for algae control.
What phosphate level should be maintained in a swimming pool?
Phosphate levels should ideally remain below 200ppb, with levels closer to zero providing less available food for algae. Levels above 500ppb can readily support algae growth and reproduction, while readings above 1,000ppb are considered high risk and can make the pool much harder to manage.
Does Phosphate Remover replace chlorine or algaecide?
No. Phosphate Remover supports algae prevention by reducing a nutrient source, but it does not sanitise the water or replace an algaecide treatment. Maintain the correct chlorine residual and use a suitable algaecide where required.
Can I use Zodiac Natural Clarifier after phosphate treatment?
Yes. Zodiac Natural Clarifier is a chitosan-based clarifier that can help the filter collect the fine particles formed during phosphate treatment. It is particularly useful if temporary cloudiness remains after application.
Should the pool filter be cleaned after phosphate removal?
The filter captures the phosphate particles created during treatment, so check the filter pressure and backwash or rinse the filter when required. Zodiac Filter Cleaner can be used when the filter media or cartridge is due for a deeper chemical clean.
Why can phosphate levels return after treatment?
Phosphates can continually re-enter the pool through leaves, soil, garden runoff, fertilisers, swimmer products and source water. Regular debris removal and periodic phosphate testing can help identify when another treatment is needed.
