Metal-Free Algae Control for Regular Pool Care

Zodiac Pool Algaecide is a high-strength treatment designed to control algae in swimming pools. Its concentrated benzalkonium chloride formula can be used for heavy algae growth, initial algae prevention and ongoing weekly maintenance.

The non-copper formula treats algae without increasing copper residuals in the water, making it a practical choice for regular algae control. Used alongside correct chlorine levels, balanced pH, good circulation and filtration, it helps keep pool water clearer and easier to manage.

Features & Benefits

  • Controls algae in swimming pools: High-strength treatment for managing active algae growth.
  • 400g/L concentrated formula: Uses benzalkonium chloride for measured, high-strength treatment.
  • Metal-free treatment: Controls algae without adding copper residuals to the pool water.
  • Three dosing options: Suitable for heavy algae growth, initial algae prevention and weekly maintenance.
  • Designed for regular pool care: Provides ongoing algae-prevention support alongside normal sanitising and filtration.

How to Use

  1. Test the pool water and adjust pH to 7.2–7.6 before treatment.
  2. Brush affected pool surfaces to loosen algae.
  3. Add the required dose based on the pool volume and treatment type.
  4. Run the circulation and filtration system during treatment.
  5. Brush affected surfaces again, then remove the remaining dead material through filtration and normal pool cleaning.

Dosage & Coverage

  • Heavy algae growth: Add 225mL per 10,000 litres of pool water.
  • Algae prevention initial dose: Add 90mL per 10,000 litres of pool water.
  • Weekly maintenance: Add 60mL per 10,000 litres of pool water.

Important Usage Information

  • Do not use in spas, pools with water features or pools with many jets, as this formula can foam.
  • This product does not replace chlorine. Maintain the required sanitiser level throughout algae treatment.
  • Use Zodiac Natural Clarifier or Zodiac Clarifier after treatment if fine dead algae remains suspended in the water.
  • Chemically clean the filter after an algae bloom has been removed to help prevent reinfestation.
  • Do not mix with other pool chemicals. Add each product separately.

Maintain free chlorine at 2–4ppm and pH at 7.2–7.6. Keep Total Alkalinity at 80–120ppm for fully tiled, pebble and plaster pools, or 125–150ppm for vinyl and fibreglass pools.

This product is classified as Dangerous Goods. Wear protective gloves and eye protection, keep the container tightly closed, and store it in a cool, well-ventilated place protected from sunlight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does metal-free algaecide mean?

Metal-free means the formula controls algae without adding copper to the pool water. This makes Zodiac Pool Algaecide different from copper-based products such as Zodiac Pool Power Algaecide and Zodiac Pool Long Life Algaecide.

Is Pool Algaecide the same as Pool Long Life Algaecide?

No. Zodiac Pool Algaecide is a benzalkonium chloride treatment for heavy algae growth, initial prevention and weekly maintenance. Zodiac Pool Long Life Algaecide is copper-based and is designed to provide longer-lasting preventative support, generally for three months or more.

Why should the pool be brushed before and after treatment?

Algae can cling to pool surfaces and collect in areas with weak circulation. Brushing loosens the growth and exposes more of it to the algaecide and chlorine, while brushing afterwards helps move dead algae into the water for filtration.

Why is pH important during algae treatment?

Algae is more likely to thrive when pH is high, while chlorine becomes less effective. Adjusting pH to 7.2–7.6 before treatment gives chlorine and the algaecide better conditions to work.

Can Pool Algaecide be used in a spa or pool with water features?

No. This formula can foam when water is heavily aerated, so it should not be used in spas, pools with water features or pools with many jets. Zodiac Supreme Pool Algaecide has a non-foaming formula and may be more suitable for those pool setups.

Why should a clarifier be used after algae treatment?

Once the algae has been treated, very fine dead material can remain suspended in the water. Zodiac Natural Clarifier or Zodiac Clarifier helps bind these particles so the filter can capture them more effectively.

Why should the filter be chemically cleaned after an algae bloom?

Algae spores and organic material can remain trapped in filter media or cartridge elements after the water clears. A chemical clean with Zodiac Filter Cleaner removes deeper contamination that normal rinsing or backwashing may leave behind.
