Fast, Powerful Control for Tough Pool Algae
Zodiac Pool Power Algaecide is a fast-acting, heavy-duty treatment for difficult algae problems in swimming pools. Its dual-active formula combines benzalkonium chloride with copper salts to target green, blue-green, mustard and black algae.
The benzalkonium chloride component provides immediate treatment support, while copper remains available in the water for longer-lasting algae control. This combination makes Pool Power Algaecide a strong problem-solving option when routine sanitising is not enough to manage established or resistant growth.
Features & Benefits
- Heavy-duty algae treatment: Designed for demanding algae problems and established growth in swimming pools.
- 2-in-1 active formula: Combines 100g/L benzalkonium chloride with 19g/L copper for fast treatment and residual support.
- Broad algae control: Suitable for green, blue-green and mustard algae, as well as black algae treatment.
- Fast-acting performance: Uses benzalkonium chloride to provide strong initial algae control.
- Copper-based residual action: Copper remains available in the water and is depleted while actively controlling algae.

How It Works
Zodiac Pool Power Algaecide combines two active ingredients with complementary roles. Benzalkonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound that disrupts algae cell membranes, helping control active growth quickly.
The copper component interferes with the cell processes algae need for growth, reproduction and photosynthesis. Residual copper can remain available after treatment, providing continued support against algae spores between regular pool maintenance.
How to Use
- Test the pool water, including pH, Total Alkalinity and copper level.
- Adjust pH to 7.2–7.6 and complete any alkalinity correction at least 48 hours before treatment.
- Brush affected walls, floors, steps and low-circulation areas to loosen algae.
- Add the required dose based on the pool volume and run normal circulation and filtration.
- Brush affected surfaces again after treatment and remove dead algae through filtration and normal pool cleaning.
- Use a clarifier if fine dead algae remains suspended, then chemically clean the filter after the bloom has been removed.
Dosage & Coverage
- Standard treatment dose: Add 500mL per 10,000 litres of pool water.
- Coverage: One 20L drum treats 400,000 litres of pool water.
Important Usage Information
- Test the copper level before treatment. Copper concentration should not exceed 1.0ppm.
- Do not add alkaline products for 48 hours before or after treatment. High pH and Total Alkalinity can cause copper to come out of solution and stain pool surfaces.
- Do not use in pools with jets or water features, as the benzalkonium chloride component can foam.
- Do not use in ionised pools or pools with elevated copper levels.
- This product does not replace chlorine. Maintain the required sanitiser level, circulation and filtration throughout treatment.
- Do not mix with other pool chemicals. Add each product separately.
Maintain free chlorine at 2–4ppm and pH at 7.2–7.6. Keep Total Alkalinity at 80–120ppm for fully tiled, pebble and plaster pools, or 125–150ppm for vinyl and fibreglass pools.
A Better Pool Experience Starts with the Right Chemistry
Zodiac pool chemicals support the key parts of everyday water care, from balance and sanitising to algae prevention, clarity, stain control and equipment protection.
Each product has a clear role in helping pool water stay cleaner, more comfortable and easier to manage, so the pool feels ready to enjoy more often.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Pool Power Algaecide a 2-in-1 treatment?
It combines benzalkonium chloride for strong initial algae control with copper for longer-lasting residual support. The two active ingredients give the product both fast treatment action and continued protection against algae spores.
How is Pool Power Algaecide different from Zodiac Pool Algaecide?
Zodiac Pool Algaecide is a high-strength, metal-free benzalkonium chloride treatment. Zodiac Pool Power Algaecide contains both benzalkonium chloride and copper and is positioned as a heavy-duty option for more difficult algae problems.
How is Pool Power Algaecide different from Zodiac Pool Long Life Algaecide?
Zodiac Pool Long Life Algaecide is a copper-based preventative treatment designed for extended seasonal protection and winterising. Pool Power Algaecide combines copper with benzalkonium chloride for stronger initial action against established algae.
Why should the copper level be tested before treatment?
Copper can remain in the pool water after previous treatments. Testing helps prevent the concentration from exceeding 1.0ppm, which may increase the risk of copper staining or discolouration.
Why must alkaline products be separated from Pool Power Algaecide?
High pH and Total Alkalinity can cause dissolved copper to come out of solution and deposit on pool surfaces. Complete alkalinity adjustments at least 48 hours before treatment and avoid alkaline additions for 48 hours afterwards.
Can Pool Power Algaecide be used in pools with water features?
No. Aeration from jets and water features can cause the benzalkonium chloride component to foam. A non-foaming product such as Zodiac Supreme Pool Algaecide may be more suitable for these pool setups.
Can Pool Power Algaecide treat black algae?
Yes. It is recommended for black algae as well as green, blue-green and mustard algae. Thorough brushing is particularly important because black algae can attach firmly to hard pool surfaces and develop a protective outer layer.
