Effective Care for Tough Pool Surface Stains

Zodiac Stain Remover is a concentrated citric-acid treatment formulated to lift rust, iron and other metal-based discolouration from swimming pool surfaces.

Its organic-acid formula works directly on deposited metals and is suited to localised marks on pool floors, steps and walls.

How to Use

Balance the pool water and allow the free chlorine level to reduce below 1ppm before treatment.
Turn the filtration system off so the pool water remains still.
Measure the required dose and apply the product directly over the stained area.
Leave the treatment in contact with the affected surface overnight.
Restart the filtration system the following day and brush the treated area thoroughly with a nylon pool brush.
Add Zodiac Metal Remover to help hold the released metals in solution and reduce the risk of renewed staining.
Re-test and rebalance the pool water, then chemically clean the filter to remove collected metal contamination.

Dosage & Coverage

Dosage: Add 200g per 10,000 litres of pool water.

Important Usage Information

Older or severe stains may require multiple treatments and may lighten gradually rather than lift completely after one application.
Do not mix directly with chlorine or other pool chemicals. Add each product separately.
Avoid using hydrochloric acid as a substitute stain treatment, as it may damage concrete and fibreglass pool surfaces.

The acidic formula may lower pool pH. After treatment, re-test the water and restore free chlorine to 2–4ppm and pH to 7.2–7.6. Keep Total Alkalinity at 80–120ppm for fully tiled, pebble and plaster pools, or 125–150ppm for vinyl and fibreglass pools.

How can I identify a metal-based pool stain?

Place a small amount of Stain Remover directly onto the affected area. If the mark lightens, it is a strong indication that the stain is metal-based. A Vitamin C tablet can also be used for this spot test.

What if the stain does not respond to the spot test?

A mark that does not lighten with Stain Remover may be organic staining caused by leaves, algae, berries or other plant material. Organic stains generally respond to a chlorine spot treatment instead.

Why should the chlorine level be below 1ppm?

High chlorine levels can oxidise metals and increase the risk of further staining during treatment. Allow free chlorine to reduce below 1ppm before applying Stain Remover.

Why should Zodiac Metal Remover be used after treatment?

Stain Remover releases metal contamination from the pool surface back into the water. Zodiac Metal Remover helps hold these metals in solution so they can be collected by the filtration system rather than settling onto the surface again.

Why should the filter be chemically cleaned after treatment?

The filtration system can collect metal contamination released during the treatment. A chemical filter clean helps remove this material from the system and supports more effective filtration afterwards.

How is this product different from All-in-One Stain Remover?

Zodiac Stain Remover WC000439 is the current citric-acid-based formulation and is not classified as Dangerous Goods for transport. All-in-One Stain Remover WPQAPS1 uses an oxalic-acid and organic-acid blend.
