Avoiding water wastage with your pool

Pools are beautiful at this time of year, but they are unfortunately also very big consumers of water, especially in the summer months. In a country that is often in drought, it is imperative that we keep our pool’s consumption as low as possible. Here are a few tips to ensure your pool doesn’t guzzle too much water and incur too much additional expense for you over the warmer months.

Maintaining water levels

While it is integral to keep your water at skimmer box level, it is not necessary to fill your pool beyond the skimmer. Firstly this will cause your skimmer box to become inefficient and secondly it will require you to backwash the pool more frequently, which can become very wasteful.

If you have a rainwater tank, this can be a good option for topping up your pool when the level starts to drop.

Ensure that no activities that result in excessive splashing occur in your pool to minimize water wastage

Using a pool cover

When your pool isn’t in use, a pool cover will work to conserve water through evaporation. It will also decrease the maintenance required and retain heat if your pool is heated.

Checking for leaks

Leaks are perhaps the most wasteful of pool problems. They are usually not difficult to detect if you keep your eye on a few key things.

Some signs of pool leaks are:

- water level dropping by 3m or more within a 24 hour time period tends to suggest there is a leak

- if the soil around the pool area or around your home is constantly damp without due reason

- any damage to the pool shell including cracks.

- broken tiles in your pool.

Backwashing

This is a necessary component of keeping your cool in good condition but it is a huge consumer of water. We would suggest waiting for a big dump of rainwater before backwashing your pool to avoid having to refill it with town water. Sometimes this is not possible, you could consider using tank water to refill the pool.
