How To Test Your Pool's pH Level
Along with using a Kreepy Krauly, keeping your swimming pool pump working well and choosing the most suitable swimming pool lights, you also need to make sure your swimming pool contains the right level of pH.
Maintaining the pH levels of your pool is one of the best ways to ensure the cleanliness and hygiene of your pool is consistently optimal.
By following these simple steps you can save yourself both time and money, and ensure your pool and its patrons have a long, healthy life.
1. The first step in checking and maintaining your pool’s pH, is ensuring you have a pH test kit. You can purchase these from any swimming pool retailer or supply shop. A pH kit consists of a collection of chemically manipulated paper strips.
2. Once you have your kit, remove one of the strips and dip the end into your pool. You will only need to leave it in there a second or two.
3. When you remove the strip you will notice a colour change (usually to blue or purple). This colour is indicative of the pH level in your pool. Compare your strip to the color chart in your kit. If, according to the chart, your pool’s pH level falls outside the recommended zone, you will need to continue with the following steps.
4. If the pool is acidic, you will need to use a pH increaser, which you can also purchase at a pool supply store. You can use this to adjust the pH level to an acceptable range. Keep in mind that an acidic pool can cause burning skin and eyes, and also has the potential to damage metals, plastics and rubber.
5. For an overly alkaline pool, you will require a pH decreaser. Alkaline water often looks cloudy, and leaves skin dry. It can also cause scales to form on your pool’s tiles or surfaces, which can be very stubborn to remove down the track.
The pH is one of the most important factors when it comes to pool water. Therefore it should be tested and adjusted if required every week. Swimming pool calcium, just like in our kettles appears fairly quickly in your pool, if the pH level is not monitored often enough. It is the combination of important knowledge and equipment that keeps your pool sparkling clean and safe.
Now, when your swimming pool is armed with all the required pool chemicals and equipment you need (such as salt water chlorinator, barracuda pool cleaner, best suitable swimming pool pump and funky swimming pool lights) it will always remain your family and friends’ favourite place to be.
