Relaxing spa and hot tub setting for the AquaSpa System Guide

AquaSpa System Guide

Begin with a gentler, chlorine-free and bromine-free spa experience for you and your family.

This guide explains how the AquaSpa system works and how to begin using it in a new or existing spa. It brings the key start-up, conversion, and system basics together in one place, helping make the AquaSpa routine clear from the beginning.

What is AquaSpa?

AquaSpa by Lo-Chlor is a chlorine-free and bromine-free spa care system for spas and hot tubs. At the heart of the system is AquaSpa Spa Sanitiser, a PHMB, also known as polyhexanide, based sanitiser that helps control bacteria in spa water without relying on traditional chlorine or bromine sanitising.

The system is built around a simple weekly routine using three core products: Spa Sanitiser, Spa Shock, and Spa Kleer. Together, they help maintain clean, sparkling water while supporting a more comfortable spa experience for users who prefer to avoid the smell, eye sting, and harsh feel often associated with traditional spa sanitisers.

AquaSpa is proudly Australian and manufactured for local spa conditions. It is suitable for indoor and outdoor spas and hot tubs, and can be used with recognised spa equipment when the system is used correctly and water is maintained according to product label and spa manufacturer directions.

Why AquaSpa Feels Different

A spa should feel relaxing, fresh, and enjoyable to use. AquaSpa was created for spa owners who want a gentler approach to water care without chlorine or bromine. The system helps maintain healthy, sparkling water while reducing the common sensory issues many people associate with traditional spa sanitisers.

Chlorine-Free & Bromine-Free

AquaSpa gives spa owners an alternative to traditional chlorine and bromine spa care, while still supporting healthy, sanitised water.

Gentler Spa Experience

The system is made for a softer-feeling spa environment, helping reduce the strong smell, eye sting, and harshness many people want to avoid.

Simple Weekly Care

The core AquaSpa routine is based around once-a-week dosing for normal conditions, making spa care easier to manage.

Made as a Complete System

AquaSpa works best when the sanitiser, shock, clarifier, balancers, and cleaning products are used together as part of one complete water care approach.

The AquaSpa 3-Step Weekly System

The core AquaSpa routine is built around three weekly products. Each product has a clear role in keeping your spa water sanitised, fresh, and clear.

Step 1: Sanitise

AquaSpa Spa Sanitiser

AquaSpa Spa Sanitiser is the heart of the system, helping maintain protection against bacteria in spa water. Weekly dose: 60ml per 1000 litres.

Step 2: Oxidise

AquaSpa Spa Shock

AquaSpa Spa Shock helps remove contaminants, odours, and organic waste that can affect water clarity and freshness. Weekly dose: 20g per 1000 litres.

Step 3: Clarify

AquaSpa Spa Kleer

AquaSpa Spa Kleer supports water clarity by helping remove oils, body fats, and fine particles that can dull the water. Weekly dose: 60ml per 1000 litres.

Want to enhance your AquaSpa experience further? AquaSpa Invigorate adds sea minerals including magnesium, potassium, and ocean trace elements to help create a softer, more relaxing spa feel. Dose at 50ml per 1000 litres once a week, or follow the product label directions.

Important Things to Know About Your Spa

Healthy, sparkling spa water depends on more than sanitiser alone. AquaSpa works best when four key areas are managed together: sanitisation, water balance, filtration, and the correct supporting products.

1. Regular Sanitisation

Heated spa water needs an effective sanitiser. Never use your spa without the correct sanitiser level in the water. The ideal AquaSpa Spa Sanitiser level is 15–20ppm.

2. Correct Water Balance

pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness affect water comfort, clarity, equipment life, and sanitiser performance.

3. Good Filtration

Clean cartridges help remove debris, oils, body fats, and suspended matter so the water can stay clear and easier to manage. Clean cartridges weekly or after heavy use.

4. The Right AquaSpa Products

The AquaSpa range includes sanitising, shocking, clarifying, balancing, cleaning, and corrective products that work together as a system.

How to Get Started in a New Spa or Hot Tub with AquaSpa

Starting a new spa with AquaSpa is straightforward, but the order matters. The goal is to remove chlorine from the fill water, balance the water, then introduce the core AquaSpa products.

Before you begin: When adding each product, run the filtration pump only and avoid running jets or air blowers. Add products one at a time, keep the cover off, and allow 30 minutes between product additions unless the product label directs otherwise. Always add chemical to water, never water to chemical.
  1. Fill the spa by placing the hose through the filter box. Leave the cover off.
  2. Add AquaSpa Chlorine Remover as per label directions. This step is essential because fill water can contain chlorine. Run the filtration pump only for 30 minutes.
  3. Test pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness using Insta Test Strips. Target levels are: pH 7.4–7.6, alkalinity 125–150ppm, and calcium hardness 200–275ppm.
  4. Adjust water balance if required using AquaSpa Alkalinity Enhancer, AquaSpa pH Reducer, or AquaSpa Calcium Enhancer.
  5. Add AquaSpa Spa Sanitiser at 60ml per 1000 litres. Run the filtration pump only for 1 hour.
  6. Add AquaSpa Spa Shock at 20g per 1000 litres. Run the filtration pump only for 30 minutes.
  7. Add AquaSpa Spa Kleer at 60ml per 1000 litres. Run the filtration pump only for 30 minutes.
  8. Run the filtration pump for a minimum of 6 hours, or until the water is clear.
  9. After 24 hours, remove the filter cartridges and clean them using AquaSpa Instant Filter Klenz.

How to Convert an Existing Spa or Hot Tub to AquaSpa

If your spa has previously been maintained with chlorine, bromine, or another system, it should be cleaned and refilled before starting AquaSpa. This helps remove residues, body fats, and build-up from the spa water, filter cartridges, and internal pipework.

Before you begin: When adding each product, run the filtration pump only and avoid running jets or air blowers. Add products one at a time, keep the cover off, and allow 30 minutes between product additions unless the product label directs otherwise. Always add chemical to water, never water to chemical.
  1. Remove the spa cover.
  2. Remove the filter cartridges and thoroughly clean them using AquaSpa Instant Filter Klenz.
  3. Add AquaSpa Pipe Klenz at 250ml per 1000 litres, then run the pump for 2 hours. Refer to the product label for full use instructions.
  4. Scoop foam residue from the spa, drain the water, then thoroughly wipe the spa with a soft cloth.
  5. Refill the spa through the filter box with fresh water. Reinstall the clean filter cartridges.
  6. Add AquaSpa Chlorine Remover as per label directions. This step is essential because fill water can contain chlorine. Run the filtration pump only for 30 minutes.
  7. Test pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness using Insta Test Strips. Target levels are: pH 7.4–7.6, alkalinity 125–150ppm, and calcium hardness 200–275ppm.
  8. Adjust water balance if required using AquaSpa Alkalinity Enhancer, AquaSpa pH Reducer, or AquaSpa Calcium Enhancer.
  9. Add AquaSpa Spa Sanitiser at 60ml per 1000 litres. Run the filtration pump only for 1 hour.
  10. Add AquaSpa Spa Shock at 20g per 1000 litres. Run the filtration pump only for 30 minutes.
  11. Add AquaSpa Spa Kleer at 60ml per 1000 litres. Run the filtration pump only for 30 minutes.
  12. Run the filtration pump for a minimum of 6 hours, or until the water is clear.
  13. After 24 hours, remove the filter cartridges and clean them again using AquaSpa Instant Filter Klenz.

Helpful Tips for Best Results

AquaSpa works best when the system is dosed accurately, the water is balanced, and the filtration system is kept clean. These simple habits help support clearer water, easier maintenance, and a more enjoyable spa experience.

  • Do not overdose. More product does not mean better water. Always calculate your spa volume carefully and follow the product label directions.
  • Know your spa volume. Accurate dosing starts with knowing how many litres your spa or hot tub holds.
  • Maintain the recommended levels. As a guide, the ideal sanitiser level is 15–20ppm. pH should be maintained between 7.4–7.6 and total alkalinity between 125–150ppm. Calcium hardness should be maintained between 200–275ppm for concrete and tiled spas and hot tubs, or 175–225ppm for other surfaces.
  • Leave the cover off when adding chemicals. Allow the spa to breathe for at least 30 minutes after dosing.
  • Run the filtration pump only when dosing. Avoid running jets or air blowers while adding AquaSpa products.
  • Add products separately. Allow suitable time between products and follow label directions.
  • Avoid chlorine-containing products. Once using AquaSpa, do not add chlorine-containing products unless you are intentionally changing systems and following the correct changeover process.
  • Clean filters regularly. Filter cartridges should be cleaned weekly, after heavy use, or whenever water clarity starts to drop.
  • Use Pipe Klenz before draining. Internal pipework can hold body fats, oils, grime, and biofilm that affect water quality. Use AquaSpa Pipe Klenz at least every three months and always before a drain and refill.
  • Drain and refill regularly. Most spas should be drained every 3 to 6 months, or more often with heavy use.
  • Clean filters after heavy use. Heavy bathing loads, body oils, cosmetics, and alcohol use can increase the amount of residue released into spa water. Clean filter cartridges promptly if water clarity starts to drop.

Yes. Water balance is still important when using AquaSpa. pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness affect water comfort, clarity, sanitiser performance, and spa equipment. Test regularly and adjust using the correct AquaSpa balancers when required.
Can AquaSpa be used with different spa finishes?
Yes. AquaSpa may be used with all types of spa finishes when the system is used correctly and the water is balanced according to the spa builder or manufacturer's recommendations.
Is AquaSpa compatible with recognised spa equipment?
Yes. AquaSpa is compatible with recognised spa equipment such as heaters and pumps when used as directed. It is also compatible with ozone generators and ionisers.
Will AquaSpa affect my spa heater?

Why should the spa cover be left off after adding products?
Leaving the cover off for at least 30 minutes after dosing allows the spa to breathe. This is also why AquaSpa recommends running the filtration pump only when adding products.
How long does it take for AquaSpa to settle after changing systems?
When first changing to AquaSpa, or after the spa has been shock cleaned, allow a week or two for the water to settle before optimum results are seen.
What is the easiest way to start with AquaSpa?
The AquaSpa Start-Up Kit is the easiest entry point because it includes the key products and accessories needed to begin using the AquaSpa chlorine-free and bromine-free system.
