The way solar pool heating works:

The pool water is heated from the sun's energy by passing through the collectors. This cycle is repeated until the whole pool is heated. The water will remain within 2deg of the set tempeerature. You can automate the heating process by using a digital solar controler, ensuring constant pool's temperature.

Benefit's:

  • Solar Pool Heating is free in running costs.
  • It uses free energy of the sun to heat the absorber.
  • It will work up till 9pm in daylight saving.
  • It will double your swimming season. It will provide all year round swimming in Northern States.

Ways to install solar heating for your pool or spa:

1. Automatic system which is plumbed into your solar provisions with a separate pump and digital controler.

  • To check your solar provision, blow into pipes to determine which line is suction and which line is return. (You will see bubbles in the pool)
  • Solar pump is to be plumbed inito the suction line.
  • Check valve should be installed on top of pump. It will keep the pump primed and stop water from returning off the roof (when pump switches off)through the pump damaging the impeller.
  • Return line from roof is to be plumbed into solar pool return.
  • Solar pump is plugged into bottom of solar controller.
  • Cold (pool) sensor is inserted into grommet on solar suction line (use pre-drilled white pipe).
  • Hot (roof) sensor is to be glued onto roof (can be put on a fence or shed roof as long as it is in the sun)When your solar starts up bubbles in the pool, it is normal, the air is being pushed out into the pool and the water will follow shortly after.

2. In conjunction or boosted system which is plumbed into the filtration system, for pools and spas that don't have solar provisions.

  • Solar pumps suction tee and return tee should be plumbed in after the filter and before the chlorinator or chlorine feeder.
  • A swing check (non-return valve) should be placed after the filter or between the suction and return tee's to prevent the return water flowing towards the filter.
  • Solar pump is plugged into timer with pool pump or both in the bottom of the chlorinator/timer.
  • The pool pump will be turned on by the timer at the same time, turning on the solar controller which controls the solar pump.

3. Manual system which uses the existing pool or spa pump by installing a 3 way valve to manually re-direct the water to the solar system.

  • 3way valve should be plumbed in after the filter and before the chlorinator or chlorine feeder sending clean water to the solar collector.
  • Return line tee to be plumbed in after the 3 way valve and before the chlorinator or chlorine feeder.
  • 3 way valve can be adjusted so that water flow can go to the solar collector or to the pool.
  • NEVER BLOCK WATER FLOW COMPLETELY.
  • WATER MUST BE ABLE TO FLOW TO THE ROOF OR POOL.IF SOLAR IS LEFT ON FOR EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, OVERHEATING OR COOLING OF THE POOL MAY OCCUR.
